Our products are COSMOS NATURAL certified by ECOCERT, and that phrase appears on a lot of packaging without much explanation. It is worth understanding, partly because it is one of the few claims on a cosmetic box that somebody independent actually checks.

Why natural on its own means nothing
There is no binding legal definition of natural in cosmetics in most markets. A brand can print it on a product that is almost entirely synthetic and break no rule. The same goes for clean, pure and botanical. The FDA is explicit about this, setting out what a cosmetic label is actually required to carry and leaving marketing adjectives out of it. This is not a conspiracy, it is just the gap between marketing language and regulated language, and it is the reason reading the ingredient list beats reading the front of the box.
What COSMOS is
COSMOS is a standard developed by a group of European certification bodies to put actual rules behind those words. The full standard is published openly by the COSMOS standard organisation. It covers where ingredients come from, which processes are permitted to turn a raw material into a cosmetic ingredient, which substances are banned outright, packaging, and how the whole thing is documented and audited.
There are two levels. COSMOS ORGANIC requires minimum percentages of certified organic content. COSMOS NATURAL, which is what our products carry, certifies that the formula meets the standard’s rules on natural origin and permitted processing without meeting those organic percentage thresholds.
The ECOCERT part
A standard is only as good as the body enforcing it. ECOCERT is one of the certifiers approved to audit against COSMOS, and certification means a third party reviewed the formula and the supply chain documentation rather than taking the manufacturer’s word for it. That is the meaningful difference between a certification and a claim.
What it does not tell you
This is the part most brands leave out. COSMOS NATURAL is a standard about ingredient origin and processing. It is not a statement that a product works, and it is not a safety ranking. Natural origin does not mean gentler, and synthetic does not mean harsh. Plenty of well evidenced, well tolerated ingredients are synthetic, and plenty of botanical extracts are common irritants.
So treat it as one input. It tells you something real about how a product was made and verified. It tells you nothing about whether the active you care about is present at a useful level, which is still a label reading question, or whether the ingredient has evidence behind it, which is a separate question again.

Where ours are made
